Allantoin

Also known as Glyoxyldiureide, 5-Ureidohydantoin

A gentle skin conditioner that helps dry, rough, or easily unsettled skin feel softer, calmer, and more comfortable.

Skin conditioner

What it is

Allantoin is a small nitrogen-containing compound found naturally in some plants and also made synthetically for consistent cosmetic use. In skincare it is mainly used as a skin-conditioning and protective-feeling ingredient. It commonly appears at modest levels inside soothing formulas rather than acting as a dramatic stand-alone treatment.

Common uses and benefits

Allantoin is found in moisturizers, cleansers, post-shave care, masks, hand and body products, and scalp formulas. It can contribute to a softer surface feel and help make a formula more comfortable for dry or irritated-feeling skin. Research on allantoin alone is limited, and studies of combination products cannot prove that allantoin caused every observed benefit.

Who may like it

It may appeal to dry, sensitive-feeling, rough, post-shave, or temporarily uncomfortable skin. It is also a useful supporting ingredient when stronger actives make a routine feel less comfortable.

Common formats

  • Allantoin
  • Synthetic cosmetic-grade allantoin
  • Allantoin in soothing multi-ingredient complexes

Pairing and use notes

It pairs well with panthenol, glycerin, bisabolol, aloe, ceramides, niacinamide, and gentle emollients. Allantoin can make an exfoliating or retinoid formula feel more balanced, but it does not neutralize the activity or irritation potential of those ingredients.

Good to know

Allantoin is generally well tolerated, but it does not make an entire formula hypoallergenic. Evidence does not support treating it as a guaranteed scar-remover or wound-healing cure. Do not apply an ordinary cosmetic to open wounds or healing surgical sites unless a clinician or the product label specifically directs it.
