Ceramides

Also known as Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Ceramide NS

Skin-identical lipids that help replenish the cushion between surface cells for softer, smoother, more resilient-feeling skin.

Barrier-supporting lipids

What it is

Ceramides are a family of waxy lipids naturally found between cells in the stratum corneum, the skin’s outermost layer. They help organize the barrier that keeps water in and outside stressors out. Cosmetic formulas may use several skin-identical ceramide types or a laboratory-designed pseudo-ceramide; these are related tools, not one interchangeable ingredient.

Common uses and benefits

Ceramide moisturizers are used to support moisture retention, reduce a dry or tight feel, and improve the comfort of a compromised-feeling barrier. Clinical studies of specific ceramide-containing formulas have shown improved hydration and transepidermal water-loss measurements. Performance depends on the ceramide type and level, the delivery system, and the surrounding blend of cholesterol, fatty acids, humectants, and emollients.

Who may like it

They may especially appeal to dry, sensitive-feeling, over-exfoliated, mature, or seasonally stressed skin. Oily and blemish-prone skin can also use ceramides in a lightweight formula, particularly when acne treatments leave the skin feeling dry.

Pairing and use notes

Ceramides are often most useful in formulas that also contain cholesterol and fatty acids. They pair easily with glycerin, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, squalane, retinoids, and exfoliating acids. When an active routine feels drying, a ceramide moisturizer can be used as the cushioning step before or after it according to product directions.

Good to know

Ceramides are generally well tolerated, but the word “ceramide” does not guarantee that every formula will repair irritation or suit every skin type. Rich creams may feel heavy, and fragrance or other supporting ingredients can still cause sensitivity. Persistent cracking, burning, rash, or eczema symptoms deserve professional care.
