What it is
Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan naturally present in skin and other connective tissues. In topical skincare it mainly acts as a humectant, helping attract and hold water at or near the skin surface. Molecular size, delivery system, and the rest of the formula influence how a product performs.
Common uses and benefits
It is most often used in hydrating serums, creams, masks, and eye products. By increasing surface hydration, it can temporarily make skin look smoother and help soften the appearance of fine dehydration lines. Topical hyaluronic acid is not the same as an injectable filler.
Who may like it
It can suit many skin types, especially skin that feels dry, dehydrated, tight, or temporarily uncomfortable. Oily and blemish-prone skin may also use it in a lightweight formula.

Pairing and use notes
It generally layers well with glycerin, ceramides, niacinamide, peptides, retinoids, and antioxidants. Apply as the product directs; following with a moisturizer can help reduce water loss and make the hydrating step feel more complete.
Good to know
Hyaluronic acid itself is generally well tolerated, but any complete formula can sting or trigger sensitivity. Patch-test if your skin is reactive, and stop using the product if persistent irritation develops.
