Retinol

Also known as Vitamin A alcohol, All-trans-retinol

A cosmetic vitamin A derivative used to improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven tone, rough texture, and clogged pores over time.

Retinoid

What it is

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative in the retinoid family. After topical application, skin converts it through intermediate steps to retinoic acid, the biologically active form. It is less direct than prescription tretinoin, and cosmetic retinol products can vary widely in strength, stability, and delivery.

Common uses and benefits

With consistent use, retinol can support skin renewal and improve the visible appearance of fine lines, rough texture, uneven pigmentation, and congestion. Changes are gradual, and a stronger or more irritating formula is not automatically a better choice.

Who may like it

It is often selected for visible photoaging, uneven texture, clogged pores, or a routine focused on long-term skin renewal. Very sensitive or already-irritated skin may need a slower introduction or a different product.

Common formats

  • Retinol
  • Encapsulated retinol
  • Stabilized retinol blends

Pairing and use notes

Use exactly as directed, usually in an evening routine. Introduce it gradually, use a supportive moisturizer, and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day. When starting, alternate it with strong exfoliating acids or other potentially irritating treatments rather than layering everything at once.

Good to know

Dryness, peeling, stinging, and temporary redness are common when beginning retinol or increasing use. Stop and seek professional guidance for severe or persistent irritation. People who are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding should ask a qualified healthcare professional before using topical retinoids.
