Salicylic Acid

Also known as Beta Hydroxy Acid, BHA

An oil-soluble exfoliating acid that helps loosen dead surface cells and clear material from pores.

What it is

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid with keratolytic and comedolytic activity. Because it is oil soluble, it is commonly formulated for oily, congested, and blemish-prone skin. In the United States, salicylic acid is also recognized as an over-the-counter acne active at concentrations from 0.5% to 2%.

Common uses and benefits

It is used to reduce the buildup of dead skin cells, improve the appearance of clogged pores and comedones, and smooth rough texture. Cleansers, leave-on products, spot treatments, and professional peels do not deliver the same exposure, so directions and frequency matter.

Who may like it

It may appeal to people with oily skin, blackheads, whiteheads, visible congestion, or rough texture. Dry or sensitive skin can still use some salicylic-acid products, but may prefer a lower frequency or a rinse-off format.

Pairing and use notes

Begin with one salicylic-acid product and follow its label. Moisturizer can help offset dryness, and broad-spectrum sunscreen belongs in the daytime routine. When starting, avoid stacking it in the same routine with multiple exfoliants, scrubs, retinoids, or other drying acne treatments.

Good to know

Overuse can cause dryness, peeling, burning, or irritation. Do not treat a stronger professional peel like a daily cosmetic product. Follow the label and avoid applying to large areas of broken or severely irritated skin. Ask a healthcare professional before use if you have an aspirin or salicylate allergy, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and using a medicated acne product.
