Shea Butter

Also known as Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter

A rich plant butter that cushions dry skin with lasting softness and a comforting, velvety finish.

Emollient & occlusive

What it is

Shea butter is a plant fat obtained from the kernels of the shea tree, Vitellaria paradoxa. It contains a blend of fatty components and is used mainly as an emollient and occlusive ingredient. Refined and unrefined shea can differ in scent, color, and minor components, while the complete formula determines the final texture.

Common uses and benefits

Shea butter is common in creams, body butters, balms, lip care, hand care, and hair products. It softens rough-feeling skin and leaves a protective-feeling layer that can slow moisture evaporation. It is an ingredient in moisturizers, not a stand-alone treatment for eczema or another medical condition.

Who may like it

It may be especially appealing for dry or very dry skin and for areas such as lips, hands, elbows, heels, and the body. People who dislike rich or occlusive textures may prefer shea in a lighter emulsion rather than a concentrated balm.

Common formats

  • Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter
  • Refined shea butter
  • Unrefined shea butter
  • Shea butter esters and derivatives

Pairing and use notes

It pairs well with glycerin, panthenol, ceramides, squalane, and other emollients. In a layered routine, use richer shea products after lighter, water-based steps unless the label directs otherwise.

Good to know

Shea butter can feel heavy or occlusive for some skin and does not guarantee that a full formula will be non-comedogenic. If you have a known sensitivity to shea or the product causes itching, redness, or persistent irritation, stop use and seek professional advice when needed.
