What it is
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are particulate ultraviolet filters used as active ingredients in mineral sunscreens. They protect mainly by absorbing UV energy, not by simply reflecting it like a mirror. Zinc oxide covers UVB and a wider span of UVA, while titanium dioxide is strongest through UVB and shorter UVA wavelengths. Particle size, surface coatings, dispersion, and the rest of the sunscreen system affect both protection and cosmetic finish.
Common uses and benefits
These filters can provide photostable UV protection in lotions, creams, sticks, powders, and sprays. Zinc oxide is especially useful for long-wave UVA coverage, while titanium dioxide can add strong shorter-wavelength protection and opacity. Seeing either ingredient—or its percentage—does not tell you the finished SPF or broad-spectrum performance. Only the labeled, tested sunscreen formula establishes those claims.

They may appeal to anyone who prefers a mineral-filter sunscreen, including people looking for photostable protection. Comfort, white cast, tint, dryness, and suitability for sensitive or blemish-prone skin vary widely by formula rather than by the word “mineral.”

Pairing and use notes
Formulators may combine zinc oxide and titanium dioxide with each other, other permitted sunscreen filters, iron oxides, antioxidants, humectants, and emollients. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an appropriate SPF, apply it evenly and generously, and follow the label for timing, water resistance, and reapplication.
Good to know
Mineral filters can leave a white cast, collect in texture, pill, or feel drying depending on the dispersion and base. Avoid inhaling airborne sunscreen powders or mists and follow all label directions. Do not estimate protection from the ingredient list, use loose mineral powder as your only sun protection, or assume makeup containing a filter provides adequate coverage without a labeled SPF and broad-spectrum claim.
